Must Have Books on the Trinity
The Trinity is the most attacked doctrine of Christianity. It is attacked by world religions like Islam, and it is attacked by cults claiming to be Christian like Mormonism and Jehovah’s Witnesses. Of all the doctrines to marvel at, the Trinity is the one that Christians should adore and study.
I want to showcase a few books that I have personally found not only a blessing, but profoundly well-written. This list is by no means exhaustive. The books here are perfect for any level of study. Neither of these books get overly technical or wordy, but they do go deep when necessary. I highly recommend these resources.
The Forgotten Trinity Dr. James White
This is the gold standard of books on the Trinity. Written by a Reformed Baptist who is one of the top apologists in the world, it contains a rich level of insight into the Trinity coupled with a beautifully rich call to worship and adore the Trinitarian God.
Dr. White’s focus is similar to Jonathan Edwards in that we must worship God as he has revealed himself in Scripture, not as we have concocted of him in our minds. The book takes this approach from cover to cover.
White spends equal time showing the proof of the Trinity from Scripture with the objections from cults and how to refute them. In Forgotten Trinity, the emphasis is on Biblical proof, not conjecture. Dr. White is the author of several other popular books, including The King James Controversy.
This is definitely the next book you’ll want to read. It makes an outstanding book for a group study.
Simply Trinity Dr. Matthew Barrett
This book is both a treatise on the nature of the Trinity and the importance of holding fast to the Biblical and historical understanding of God. Barrett writes in a friendly style while keeping true to what matters.
The main focus of the book is to refute the dangerous new teachings that attack the Trinity that has infiltrated today’s church. Known as the Eternal Functional Submission (or Subordination) of the Son (EFS), it attacks the nature of the Trinity as revealed in Scripture. Put directly, these teachings try to “humanize” the Trinity by focusing on a social model.
Dr. Barrett spends the majority of his time explaining why this teaching is in error and why the classic, Nicean historical teaching of the Trinity must be fought for in the church. The book focuses on the validity of the eternal generation of the Son, as it is revealed in Scripture.
This is another book to dive into not only for the rich exposition of the Trinity from Scripture, but to be prepared to recognize and refute the heretical and unorthodox teachings that constantly creep into the church that attack the Trinity.
